Result : South Africa won by 10 Wicket against Zim

Spare a thought for followers of Zimbabwean cricket. A two-year wait for an open tournament and their campaign ends even before other teams have played a match.

After being bamboozled by the spin of the Mendis duo against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe were resoundingly thrashed by ten wickets by title contenders South Africa in their second game at Hambantota on Thursday. Thus ended the campaign of Africa's lesser team.

For the continent's primary cricket outfit, pace did the trick  after AB de Villiers elected to bowl on a wicket with some refreshing bounce and carry. Jacques Kallis led South Africa's four-pronged seam battery with his best ever Twenty20 International figures of 4-15 as Zimbabwe just about managed to last out their quota of 20, finishing on an uninspiring 93-8, thanks to Craig Ervine's 37. Fast bowling accounted for all the eight wickets to fall.

South Africa's reply was as emphatic as it was expected to be - an attacking 94-run opening partnership between Richard Levi (50*) and Hashim Amla (32*) taking them home in a canter in 12.4 overs. Levi struck six boundaries in his 43-ball knock, while Amla was slightly more cautious, finding the fence three times as Zimbabwe struggled to test the dangerous opening pair.

Earlier, after Dale Steyn turned in a scathing opening spell, conceding just two runs in two overs, the brothers Morkel conspired to remove Zimbabwe's top three. At 17 for 3 an early break looked likely, but Zimbabwe dug in through Ervine, who scored four of the six boundaries that were hit.

If it was spin that had caused their downfall against Lanka, it was the turn of pace this time. Steyn wobbled in the air, Morne Morkel reared up, before Kallis' variations landed the fell blow on the inning's spine.

Vusi Sibanda was bowled by Morne Morkel, while skipper Brendan Taylor edged behind to de Villiers. Hamilton Masakadza lofted Albie Morkel to Levi at mid-on.

Ervine and Stuart Matiskenyeri added 35 but then it was time for Kallis to get into the act. Matsikenyeri struck him straight to extra cover and Elton Chigumbura was trapped plumb in front.  Graeme Cremer tried to hook the South African veteran but gloved behind.

de Villiers then dove spectacularly to his left to curtail Prosper Utseya 's innings off Steyn and Ervine was the lone man to stage a fight. He was finally out when he too edged to give de Villiers his fourth catch of the innings and Kallis his fourth victim. Zimbabwe managed to last 20 overs, but gained precious little in terms of runs.

Result : India beaten Afganisthan by 23 runs

A winning start against a weak side, but not without some stark reminders of what requires redress. India defeated Afghanistan by 23 runs, kick-starting their ICC World Twenty20 campaign on a victorious note, but were tested first by the hulking left-arm pacer Shapoor Zadran when they were sent in, and then by a series of Afghani cameos that threatened momentarily before fizzling out.

Shapoor sent down a terrifying opening spell, taking out openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir cheaply, before Virat Kohli (50) and Suresh Raina (38) capitalised on dropped catches and 16 extras to help India to 159-5.

After looking India in the eye for over three-quarters of the match, Afghanistan caved in under the pressure of a mounting required rate, finishing their chase on 136 in 19.3 overs when L. Balaji shot out their last two batsmen in successive balls.

Balaji finished with 3-19, but it was Yuvraj Singh's 3-24 that got the ball spinning for India. Yuvraj bowled economically and accurately, and although he had his figures spoiled in his last over, his double strike in the 12th over was what deflated the chase.

Skipper Mohammad Shahzad, a self-confessed fan and practioner of MS Dhoni's helicopter shot, launched the counter, swinging after everything in an entertaining 18, before top-edging L. Balaji to Yuvraj at mid-on. Afghanistan were 42-1 at the end of the Powerplay. Skipper Nawroz Mangal (22), who had opted to field keeping in mind what he considered his team's strength - batting, massacred a massive swept six off Balaji, but was trapped in front against Yuvraj, who was brought on in the eighth over.

R. Ashwin was introduced and spanked over his head for four by Karim Sadiq (26). In the next over, Sadiq slapped Yuvraj past point for another boundary, keeping the required rate in check. Afghanistan needed 91 needed off last ten when Dhoni missed a stumping chance of Sadiq off Ashwin.

But then Afghanistan imploded as three wickets fell for the addition of one run. Sadiq was unable to make good his reprieve. He tried hefting Yuvraj over the deep mid-wicket boundary and was held by Gautam Gambhir.

Yuvraj struck again on the next ball - his third wicket - with one that drifted in and spun away from Asghar Stanikzai; the batsman feathered it to Dhoni. Samiullah Shenwari then lobbed a return catch to Ashwin as Afghanistan plummeted to 76-5. With the asking rate well over 11, India's bowling did not have to do anything special to see the team home.

There was another minor twist though. The no.5 Mohammad Nabi (31, 17b) carted sixes off Ashwin and Zaheer Khan, who had returned for the 16th over, bringing his team back into the equation with 44 needed off the last four.  But Ashwin, harnessing the pause in delivery to disturbingly good effect, snared Nabi in the 17th over, the batsman charging down and edging to Rohit Sharma at mid-off.

Earlier, Afghanistan spilled atleast four catches and conceded 16 extras to help India on their way. India were sent in and Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir lived dangerously against Shapoor, who bowled three overs in a fiery opening spell. One delivery skidded on to Sehwag and was clocked 150.3 by the speed gun. That might have been an exaggeration, an aberration of technology, but it did not take a gadget to guage just how well Shapoor was bowling.

Shapoor accounted for both openers. Gambhir played on and soon after Sehwag was done in outside the off stump, the edge travelling fast and sure to the 'keeper. Yuvraj looked good in the middle, stroking a clean straight six in his 17 before he was by Nabi off his own bowling on 17. One run later, Yuvraj was out for good, slicing offie Karim Sadiq into short third man's hands.

Nabi then dropped the new man SUresh Raina, again off his own bowling, when the leftie had made 2. Another reprive followed as Kohli's catch was fluffed by Sami at long on off Sadiq, when the batsman had made 33. What was worse Sami managed to puch the ball over the boundary, conceding a six. The two dropped batsmen went on to add a total of 53 to their respective scores.

Meanwhile, wicket-keepr Shahzad walked off the pitch due to a recurring knww injury and handed the bibg gloves over to Sadiq. Shapoor came in for his last over and went for 14 as India crossed 100 in the 14th. Raina was dropped again on 20, this time leg-spinner Shenwari inducing a leading edge that was spilled at point by the 12th man.

Kohli reached his 50 - his sixth half-century in as many international innings - in 38 balls, but got out on the next ball as Afghanistan finally held a catch. Attempting to clear long on with a sweet strike off Dawlat Zadran, Kohli was taken just iside the boundary by Nabi over his head. Raina finally ran out of luck when he was bowled by Nabi in the last over, but Dhoni clobbered a six and a four off the last two balls as India ended on 159-5.

Australia vs Ireland Result : Aussies won

So (9) Australia were ranked just a spot above (10) Ireland in the T20 rankings, and this had a lot of people talking, smirking at a superficial assessment, that didn’t recognise ability or class. When they came out to play their first match of the World T20 against Ireland, they probably knew that they would win by 7 wickets in the end. What were you saying about their ranking?
On the field, David Warner couldn’t ignore what Niall O’Brien was telling him, it certainly wasn’t banter, as umpires Dharmasena and Dar soon read out the code to the Irish skipper, in an effort to bring the mercury down. The two Ws-Warner and Watson, then decided to let the bat do the talking, raining blows on Boyd Rankin and Trent Johnston, with the bowling more pedestrian, than lethal.
Porterfield read the signs, and brought in his changes, first Alex Cusack and then George Dockrell, with no immediate result, as David Warner brought up his 1000th run in T20 internationals off the former’s second over. Dockrell however enjoyed better luck, as he forced the left-hander to step out, with the ball flying towards Kevin O’Brien, who took a catch running towards the ball from deep midwicket. Take one Ireland.
Man-of-the-Match Shane Watson carried on with the job, putting the bad ball away for four and six, as and when the situation demanded. Paul Stirling did have a caught-and-bowled chance, but failed to grab it with both hands. Watson did. When it came in short, he pulled hard, getting his feet out of the way, soon bringing up a half-century with his third six, more than what eleven Irishmen managed when they had a bat in their hands. But in what came like an abrupt power cut, the all-rounder underestimated Trent Johnston’s throwing arm from short third man, with the throw hitting the bull in its eye, as Watson struggled to reach the bowler’s end.

His partner Michael Hussey, probably got too comfortable playing second fiddle, getting trapped lbw, pad first on off and middle.  The scoreboard read 95/3, and it didn’t matter if Cameron White was dropped by Trent Johnston, a decent effort though for a 38-year old with ageing knees and no hair. White made full use of the providence, using the cross-bat to good effect, bringing up the winning runs with a lofted shot  that saw the ball crossing the ropes at deep midwicket. The gloves came off as he shook hands with the man who succeeded him as T20 skipper- George Bailey.
Earlier, the Irish openers batted like schoolboys after winning the toss, taking the aerial route, failing to realise that they were falling for the bait. Skipper William Porterfield fell off the very first ball of the match, going for the hook, with Mitchell Starc’s long legs at long leg, helping his hands to do the rest. Right-handed Paul Stirling decided to try the same stunt in the same region,  with Shane Watson getting his palms around the ball at third man. 15/2, Ed Joyce and Gary Wilson, the new batsmen at the crease.

They spent as much time at the crease as a fly would under a swatter, with Joyce hitting Maxwell to Warner at mid-off. Gary Wilson opened his account with a good-looking drive to deep extra cover for four, but four balls later, played across when he should have been playing straight to old chinaman Brad Hogg. Bad shot-selection resulting in a bad-looking scoreboard-33/4. Out come the O’Brien brothers- Niall and Kevin.
More than a fightback, it was the gaps that the brothers managed to find, that saw the greenhorns bringing up the highest partnership of their inning. But then  all good things have to come to an end, Niall O’Brien  played across to a slower delivery, only to find Shane Watson’s arms in the air, and his bails. Two balls later, his younger brother did himself in, trying the upper cut, only to find an edge that flew to glovesman Matthew Wade for keeps. Six wickets down, but no six yet in the inning.
Trent Johnston lasted just seven balls against the country of his birth, hitting a four, before being yorked by a Starc beauty.  Australia’s best bowler- Shane Watson wasn’t at his best as he ran in to bowl the last over. Nigel Jones managed to pull a short ball for six, the first of the match, as the Irish milked 12 runs from the last six balls, to finish with a total of 123/7.
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Irish were finished even before the Aussies started batting.

Sri Lanka Vs Zimabwe Result : Host won by 82 runs

Spinner Ajantha Mendis took a record six wickets for just eight runs as hosts Sri Lanka humbled Zimbabwe in the opening match of the World Twenty20 on Tuesday. Mendis, 27, marked his international return after an eight-month injury lay-off with the devastating haul to wreck Zimbabwe for 100 in 17.3 overs in the Group C match in Hambantota.

Zimbabwe could never cope with Mendis's unreadable deliveries and they collapsed like a pack of cards in pursuit of the daunting target of 183 set by Sri Lanka at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium.

Sri Lanka, who lost the toss and were sent into bat, owed their total of 182-4 to Kumar Sangakkara (44) and Jeevan Mendis (43 not out), who shared a 94-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Ajantha Mendis struck two blows in his first over, removing Vusi Sibanda (11) and Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor (0) off successive deliveries. He next had Zimbabwe's top-scorer Hamilton Masakadza (20).

He returned for his second spell and took four more wickets to end any lingering Zimbabwean hopes -- and improve his own international Twenty20 record figures of 6-16, set against Australia at Pallekele last year.

Jeevan Mendis took 3-24 to cap an all-round performance.

Sangakkara, the newly crowned ICC player of the year, hit a 26-ball 44, studded with a six and two boundaries, while Jeevan Mendis smashed four boundaries and a six during his unbeaten 43 off 30 balls.

Both the left-handers lifted Sri Lanka from 82-3 after they were put into bat.

Tillakaratne Dilshan hit five boundaries during his rapid 39 before he fell caught behind by Taylor off leg-spinner Graeme Cremer. Skipper Mahela Jayawardene was run out for 13 while debutant Dilshan Munaweera made 17.

Twelve teams competing in the event are divided in four groups, with the top two teams advancing to the Super Eight stage, which will decide the four semi-finalists.

Australia take on Ireland in Group B while former champions India face Afghanistan in Group A -- both matches in Colombo -- on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka are bidding to end their 16-year wait for a second major title after winning the 50-over World Cup in 1996.

World T20 starts Today ; Whose Cup is it anyway ?

Bang onn.. From today, plant your-self in front of the TV screen from the evenings and cancel all outings.No the Indian Premier League is not here to entertain you.The World T20, a tournament that pits the 12 best teams on the planet, all vying to be the best in the shortest format of the game, is set for a launch on the morrow with a game between hosts SriLanka and Zimbabwe at hambantota.

Like the IPL, there is no fabulous opening ceremony, no film stars. But expect the cricket to be top class in what should be one of the most 'open' T20 World Cups.

Four time 50 over World Champ Australia are ranked No 9 by ICC. So the kangaroos are now desperate to prove themselves in this format when at the other round all the other heavy-weight teams like India, Pakistan, South-Africa are also not going to loose a chance to have the Title on their hand too. But who can forget the Dark-Horses like Bangladesh , New Zealand too !!

From last few year a new trend started .Now a days every Big Tournament including WorldCup or any Big Match series comes with an anthem song or we can say a official event song.So how can T20 World Cup 2012 can be a diffrent ? Yesterday ICC has launched the official anthem of this year's t20 world cup.It has been launched in two language still . One is Sinhala Language which is the official language of Srilanka,the host of WCt20 2012. and one English language which is the international language.

India will not Wear the new Jersey in Worldcup

Every new world cup comes with a new jersey for every national team playing it.This year was also not exception as all of the team playing t20 world cup got their new jersey from their dress sponsor. India was also not exception. They also get a really nice looking jersey for their new campaign "t20 world cup" . But alas as BBCI has conferemed team India will not be wearing it on t20 world cup for some reason.

 Team India will not use their new jersey, which was introduced with much fanfare recently by Nike forthe World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka due to a "superstition", DNA reported on Saturday.

India did not played with new jersey on last match too !

When men MS Dhoni played the second T20 international against New Zealand in Vizag wearing his old jersey, it did raise a few eyebrows. But news of the BCCI red flag explains new team now.

How the new Jersey actually looks ?

The blue uniform has the Indian tricolor on the shoulder, with the BCCI logo in the center. Along with that are the three gold stars representing three of India wins the World Cup in 1983, 2007 and 2011.

Why India will not wear it ?

But the BCCI, the DNA reports, is of the view that the current ODI uniform lucky and fans can see the team using the same when they leave the field in the friendly match against Sri Lanka on September 15. The report also says that Nike officials refused any comment, but sources said the council wants to put the Indian ODI team because India won the World Cup of 2011 in that shirt.

"We decided to go with the old shirt and we have communicated this to Nike. Players will not use the new colors," a top board official apparently told DNA

The ICC Twenty20 World Cup 2012 is just about to start from September 18 this year and will continue till October 7. This year the championship will be hosted by the island country of Sri Lanka, the first oriental nation to do so in the history of T20 World Cup championship.
